Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler most commonly used to restore facial contours and improve signs of aging. It is injectable and optimized for the cheek, lips, and area around the mouth.

What is Juvederm?

There are multiple products categorized as being in the Juvederm family, each one targeted to a different area of the face. The Juvederm types are:

  • Juvederm Voluma XC. This is typically used for the cheek area and adds volume beneath the surface of the skin.
  • Juvederm XC and Juvederm Vollure XC are most effective in those fine wrinkles around the mouth and nose, also known as smile lines. These Juvederm types will help the skin regain some of its elasticity, and fill out these wrinkles.
  • Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Volbella XC are lip enhancement treatments.

Juvederm fillers typically have a smooth gel-like consistency. Juvederm has a base of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance the human body creates which stimulates the production of collagen. Collagen is the connective tissue that plumps the skin.

Decreased production of collagen and hyaluronic acid are natural side-effects of aging. Juvederm replenishes both substances and helps achieve an overall more youthful appearance.

How Much Does Juvederm Cost?

The cost of Juvederm treatment can vary depending on your location and your physician’s experience level, as well as the number of syringes. In the last few years, Juvederm has hovered around $600 a syringe. Since they are an elective treatment, insurance will not cover the cost of these injections.

Juvederm Procedure

Juvederm is one of the most common nonsurgical cosmetic procedures done in the US.

Before Receiving Juvederm

Most of the preparation for the procedure will involve discussing your expectations and cosmetic goals with your doctor. When undergoing any cosmetic procedure, it is important to have realistic goals, and also to be honest about your expectations.

General advice to follow is to avoid medications like aspirin or ibuprofen. It is also advised that you avoid alcohol and smoking before receiving treatment. This can help reduce bruising. You should also alert your doctor as to any allergies or sensitivities.

Receiving Juvederm

Juvederm is an injection approved by the FDA since 2006. It is minimally invasive, and the overwhelming majority of patients remain awake while receiving treatment.

Your doctor or other medical professional will use a pen to mark areas that are to be treated. The injection of Juvederm will then be administered. The treatment area will also be massaged to ensure an even distribution, and also to reduce possible swelling. The injection itself contains a small amount of lidocaine which will help any pain remain entirely manageable. The entire procedure typically takes 15 minutes to an hour.

Side Effects

There are a few side effects associated with Juvederm. These side effects will nearly always subside within four weeks, more commonly within two weeks. Some of these potential side effects include:

  • Redness
  • Tenderness
  • Lumps or bumps
  • Minor pain
  • Itching

After Receiving Juvederm

The recovery time for Juvederm is minimal. It is advisable to avoid sun exposure, wearing makeup, and drinking alcohol for about 24 hours after receiving treatment.

Juvederm is an extremely effective treatment and most patients begin seeing results almost immediately, once swelling reduces.

The effects of the treatment will last between six months and two years.
