Differences Between Gummy Bear Implants and Traditional Silicone Breast Implants

For patients considering breast augmentation, research is key. Whether you want a bigger or better shape, there are multiple options available for you. You may have heard the terms “gummy bear implant” or “silicone gel implant” floating around. But what exactly is the difference between gummy bear and silicone gel implants? At first glance, many women believe these two implant types to be synonymous. However, they are different in notable ways, and we’re here to show you how.

What are “gummy bear” implants?

Among the various options available for breast augmentations is the gummy bear implant. While the name sounds silly, these teardrop-shaped gel implants have actually grown in popularity since their introduction in the mid-2000s. Compared to other types of breast implants, including saline and silicone, these implants hold their shape better. In terms of composition, gummy bear implants consist of similar materials to silicone gel implants.

Breast implants are comprised of an outer silicone shell and some form of filler material. Usually, implants contain either silicone gel or saline solution. The main difference between gummy bear and traditional silicone implants is the consistency of the silicone filler gel. Gummy bear implants use a thicker filler material than traditional silicone implants. This helps the implants to better retain their shape, even if the outer shells break.

Are gummy bear implants safe?

Yes. Many years of evaluation and testing have determined breast implants to be safe. However, Dr. Wall performs regular screenings on his patients with implants to ensure that they do not rupture or move out of place. Past iterations of breast implants were prone to rupture, and the filler material would leak into the surrounding tissue. Modern breast implants are safe, and gummy bear implants are sturdier than other types of breast implants. Gummy bear implants are less likely to rupture or leak due to their strength.

It is important to note that, in 2011, the FDA found a link between certain types of breast implants and a type of large cell lymphoma. The full name of this rare type of cancer is breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma.

Are gummy bear implants right for me?

Gummy bear implants are excellent options for many patients. Particularly, patients experiencing any of the below breast shapes or breast issues can be helped tremendously by this type of implant.

  • If you have very little breast tissue, or have had the breast tissue removed, these implants provide a shape where there previously was none.
  • Those who seek breast augmentation, but prefer a more natural shape, are more likely to enjoy the results from these implants.
  • These implants produce better results in individuals with breast tissue that is not overly lax or sagging.
  • For those with a constricted breast, this implant type is a good choice for you.

What are the risks involved with gummy bear implants vs traditional silicone implants?

Risks associated with breast augmentation vary depending on the type of implant your plastic surgeon uses. Below, we outline the risks and considerations for gummy bear implants and traditional silicone gel implants.

Gummy Bear Implants:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Changes in nipple sensation
  • Pain
  • Implant rupture
  • Scarring
  • Nausea and/or vomiting from anesthesia
  • Breast tissue wrinkling
  • More difficult detection of leakage or rupture

Silicone Gel Implants:

  • Capsular contracture
  • Pain
  • Infection
  • Usually temporary changes in nipple sensation
  • Rupture of the implant
  • Implant leakage

How long do these breast implants last?

On average, women replace or remove their gummy bear implants after 10 years, with regular screenings and MRIs every 2-3 years. These screenings help to ensure that a rupture or leakage into the surrounding tissue has not occurred. Breast implants simply are not intended to last a lifetime, so you will likely need surgery in the future for replacements or removal.

In some cases, patients experience rotation of the implants. When this happens, the breast might take on an irregular shape due to the teardrop-shaped implant being out of place. The long the implant stays in the breast tissue, the more likely you are to experience either rotation of the implants or implant-related complications. Also, significant weight changes in patients lead to a change in the appearance of the breasts.
