A Brazilian Butt Lift, or BBL, is a type of surgical procedure that uses fat transfer to dramatically enhance the volume and shape of the butt. It is done with the intention of accentuating the curves of the body while leaving the butt larger and overall perkier. 

Not only is the shape of the butt improved, but so are surrounding areas such as the hips, waist, back, and thighs. This is because it is a fat transfer, so the unwanted fat from these areas will be removed and relocated into the place where you want more fat, i.e. - the butt.

A butt lift can be done a couple different ways. In addition to the aforementioned Brazilian butt lift, there is also the possibility of a butt lift with implants. While both are used to enhance the volume and shape of the butt, the methods used are very different. 

In a BBL, fat is removed from different fatty parts of the body (thighs, stomach, etc.) via liposuction. The removed fat is then purified before being implanted back into the buttocks.

This procedure is fairly similar to that of breast implants, as round or oval silicone implants are inserted into the cheeks. An incision is made in the crease between the buttocks and the implants are put into place. 

Generally, the BBL is the preferred procedure over the butt lift with implants. This is for many reasons. For one, implants pose more of a risk for potential complications such as infection, sagging, displacement, scar tissue formation, and wound healing problems around the incision site. The transferring of fat, aka a BBL, also has a longer lifespan than implants as well as a higher likelihood of altering the butt’s shape.

A Brazilian butt lift works by transferring body fat from other areas of the body into the buttocks, all in just one procedure. To begin, Dr. Wall will start with a liposuction, removing excess fat. The most common places to remove fat from include the back, abdomen, thighs, and hips. To ensure he gathers good quality fat, Dr. Wall will likely perform liposuction on at least two different areas. While removing the fat, he will also work to contour the areas in order to further enhance your results. 

Once the fat is removed from the body via liposuction, it will be carefully purified, with STEM cells being separated from the fat. The purified fat is then injected back into the buttocks in different areas and layers. Because the fat tissue came directly from your body, it is not a foreign substance, meaning there is little to no chance of your body rejecting it. 

The procedure itself takes approximately 90 minutes to complete, with most patients returning home the very same day.

The cost of a Brazilian butt lift depends on several factors. Remember that included with the BBL is liposuction and contouring. The number of areas to be liposuctioned as well as the fat injections into the butt are some key factors into the determination of the price. It is important to note that not all of the body fat injected into the butt will permanently take. The amount of fat that takes varies from person to person, but on average, a patient can expect to retain about 70% of the total transferred fat. Any fat that does not take will simply die and become absorbed by the body. What does take, however, will last for life. You can assume that any fat still remaining in the bottom 6 months after the procedure will remain permanent. With a butt lift with implants, however, the implants will need to be replaced every 8-12 years or so. 

As for the recovery, most patients require at least 5-7 days before returning to work or other regular activities. You should avoid sitting directly on your butt for 7 to 10 days after the procedure. You should also avoid any strenuous activities, like exercise, for about 4-6 weeks following the surgery. Once you do begin exercising, start with light exercise and then slowly build your way back up.
