How Many Sessions for Laser Hair Removal?

Let’s face it. Shaving two or even three times a week gets old fast. It’s also expensive, especially if you have coarser or faster-growing hair. If you’re tired of shaving, buying razors, and suffering from nicks, cuts, or razor bumps, we encourage you to consider laser hair removal. At the Wall Plastic Surgery Center, we stand behind laser hair removal treatments as a great alternative for shaving.

Dr. Forrest Wall is a board-certified plastic surgeon with years of experience in breast reconstruction, laser skin resurfacing, and other cosmetic procedures. As an internationally-known pioneer in his field, Dr. Wall uses his extensive knowledge and training to deliver only the best results for his patients. If you’re interested in eliminating your need for shaving with laser hair removal, call the Wall Plastic Surgery Center today at 318-221-1629 to schedule your consultation.

How does laser hair removal work?

This treatment is one of the most effective alternatives to shaving, waxing, and plucking in the world of modern cosmetic procedures. We use highly effective light technology to target the hair follicles within your skin, which other hair removal products and methods cannot reach. Laser hair removal targets these follicles, alters them, and results in smooth, hair-free skin.

We use FDA-approved, medical-grade lasers for hair removal treatments. These lasers emit highly focused, short pulses of light. They are more attracted to the darker pigment in your hair, so they do not damage your skin. As the hair follicle absorbs the light from the laser, it heats up. This heat changes the follicle, causing the hair to fall out. The follicle is then unable to produce hair in the future.

If you’re concerned about the safety of the procedure, don’t worry. Laser hair removal is completely safe. As we stated above, the melanin in your hair attracts the lasers, so they don’t damage your skin. It is an outpatient procedure, meaning you may resume your normal activities immediately after leaving our office.

How many laser hair removal sessions do you need?

It is important to remember that the number of sessions you need depends on your body. Everyone has different amounts of hair, different hair thicknesses, and different hair growth rates. To completely get rid of your unwanted hair, we will schedule multiple sessions depending on your personal hair growth cycles. In most cases, patients only require around 4 to 6 sessions in order to achieve the results they want. Rarely, some patients require 8 sessions for their desired results. Additionally, it is important to remember what kind of results you’re looking for. If you want to completely get rid of the hair in a certain area, you will have more sessions than if you were only looking to thin the amount of hair.

Why are laser hair removal follow-up sessions needed?

In order to get the most out of your laser hair removal treatments, we recommend follow-up treatments. If your sessions are properly spaced out, your full treatment cycle could last as long as nine months. Follow-up sessions ensure that the treated hair follicles do not regenerate. Laser hair removal isn’t technically permanent, but it still slows or eliminates your hair growth over a long period of time.

Who is a good candidate for this treatment?

Patients of all skin types and skin tones are good candidates for laser hair removal treatment. Men and women alike enjoy the benefits of this treatment. However, sessions are most effective on patients with a high color contrast between their skin tone and their hair color. Basically, it works best on people with paler skin tones, but very dark hair. In order to increase the effectiveness of your own treatment, try to avoid sun exposure. The darker your skin becomes due to sun exposure, the less effective your treatment will be.

How do I prepare for laser hair removal?

In order for us to achieve the best possible results for you, we ask that you follow these simple guidelines prior to your laser hair removal treatment.

  • Arrive with fresh and completely clean skin, without lotion, oils, or fragrances.
  • We recommend shaving the area no sooner than 24 hours before your treatment time. This helps in avoiding irritation to the area. Also, do not wax, tweeze, or use a chemical hair removal product between your sessions.
  • Avoid sun exposure as much as possible, and do not use tanning beds. Use sunscreen of at least 30 SPF on a daily basis.
  • Avoid topical products that make your skin sensitive to the sun, including salicylic acid or retinol creams, for at least three days prior to your treatment.
  • Follow all instructions regarding prescription medications for your treatment.
  • Do not undergo Botox injections, filler injections, chemical peels, or microdermabrasion for at least 14 days prior to your treatment.

Is there any downtime for laser hair removal?

Not at all. Immediately after Dr. Wall finishes your laser hair removal treatment, you will resume all normal activities. It is non-invasive, and safer than other hair removal methods. Laser hair removal lacks the risk of nicks and cuts with a razor, chemical burns and irritants from creams, and the pain associated with waxing. If done incorrectly, waxing also incurs the risk of pulling off the top layer of your skin. Laser treatments involve none of these risks. At the Wall Plastic Surgery Center, we use gentle, safe, and effective lasers for our patients. With only the best state-of-the-art technology, we guarantee your experience will be worthwhile.

Where can I have this treatment done on my body?

Remember that certain areas of the body require a higher number of sessions than others. For women, commonly treated areas include the following.

  • Underarms
  • Legs
  • Face
  • Bikini line
  • Brazilian area

Men often want to thin the amount of facial hair they have, so as to make shaving an easier experience. They also experience less razor burn with less facial hair.
