Double Chin Reduction

double chin reduction

Submental fat, or what is more commonly known as a double chin, can be a nuisance for anybody. We hear frequently of people searching for the best way to achieve a double chin reduction. The buildup of submental fat is a common condition, occurring when a layer of fatty tissue forms below your chin and jawline. Although it is often something that is associated with weight gain, this is not the be-all and end-all cause by any means. A double chin can also form as a result of genetics or the loosening of the skin that comes with aging.

Having a double chin does not necessarily indicate that a person is in poor health. Even the healthiest people can sometimes struggle with this pesky layer of submental fat. While it doesn’t have a negative effect on your health, it can have one on your self-esteem and body image.

Clients often ask us how to get rid of neck fat. Luckily, there are a number of ways you can reduce the appearance of a double chin. Here, Dr. Forrest Wall of the Plastic Surgery Center will provide you with some tips, both natural and treatment-based, for double chin reduction

How to Get Rid of Double Chin

There are many ways one might get rid of a double chin. Some natural ways may include exercises that target the area, skin care products, or massage tools. There are also multiple procedures and treatments that you can seek to get rid of neck fat. Below, we’ll go into more detail about the different ways you might reduce your double chin.

Double Chin Exercises

There is no scientific evidence that proves chin exercises are completely effective in getting rid of a double chin. However, there is plenty of evidence that proves exercising in general is the most natural and effective way to burn fat in your body. With that knowledge, we can only assume that engaging in exercises that target your chin fat directly will certainly do more good than harm.

To reduce submental fat, you’ll want to target muscles in that specific area. Chewing gum regularly is an easy way to put those muscles into motion. Here are some other facial exercises that can aid in the elimination of your double chin fat:

STRAIGHT JAW JUT

Tilt your head back to look at the ceiling while pushing your lower jaw forward.

BOTTOM JAW JUT

Tilt your head back to look at the ceiling. Turn your head to the right while sliding your bottom jaw forward. Hold for a few seconds, then repeat the process with your head turned to the left.

NECK STRETCH

Tilt your head back to look at the ceiling while pressing and holding your tongue against the roof of your mouth.

PUCKER UP

Tilt your head back to look at the ceiling while puckering your lips.

NECK ROLLS

Do some neck rolls to get rid of those neck rolls! For this, slowly rotate and stretch your neck in a rolling, circular motion.

TONGUE STRETCH

Stretch your tongue up and out in regular intervals.

BALL EXERCISE

Place a resistance ball of about 9-10 inches underneath your chin. Press your chin downwards against the ball. Repeat multiple times daily.

In addition to exercises that target your chin directly, full-body exercise like cardio and strength training can also help reduce your neck fat as well as in the rest of your body. Focusing on your diet can also make all the difference.

How to Lose Double Chin

Other natural ways to lose chin fat that don’t require exercise may be as simple as a skin care product. Moisturizers that are made of certain vitamins and botanical extracts can target your neck fat and help firm it, all while hydrating the skin and restoring its youthful appearance.

There are many products on the market these days that target your neck and chin specifically. Look for products that specify neck firming or tightening properties. Items that contain Vitamin C, caffeine, green tea extracts, or collagen are all great for targeting loose skin.

There are many other products available that are meant specifically for double chin reduction. Devices such as chin applicators adhere to the skin and use substances similar to those mentioned before (collagen, caffeine, etc.) to help restore the skin’s elasticity. There are also facial straps that work to tighten the submental area. Mouthpieces that aid in jaw exercising are becoming more popular in fat burning and stimulating muscle growth, as well.

Massage tools are another one of many products that people use to reduce the appearance of neck fat. Lymphatic massage tools like gua sha designed for the purpose of neck tightening can be useful for stimulating collagen production. They also help improve the elasticity of skin, burn fat, and help your blood circulate more easily.

Treatments for Double Chin

If natural remedies don’t seem to do the trick, The Plastic Surgery Center offers more permanent treatments that treat your double chin. Despite a more obvious solution like facelift surgery in Shreveport, Lipolysis treatments, coolsculpting, and mesotherapy are all popular minimally invasive procedures that target submental fat. We’ll break each of these down into further detail below.

LIPOLYSIS

Lipolysis treatments are certainly a quicker solution for eliminating a double chin than any natural method. There are two different types of treatments with lipolysis: laser and injection. Laser lipolysis is noninvasive and works by melting chin fat from the heat energy of a laser beam.

Injection lipolysis is still minimally invasive but more so than laser treatment. It works by injecting a solution into the chin that digests fat cells. For the best results, this treatment must be administered multiple times over 4-6 week intervals.

Both laser and injection treatments are relatively painless. However, side effects such as bruising, swelling, and pain may occur following the treatment.

COOLSCULPTING

Coolsculpting is used to eliminate fat in several areas of the body, including the thighs, back, abdomen, and yes, double chin. It is similar to laser lipolysis in a way. However, instead of melting the fat cells in the chin, it freezes them. Hence the name Coolsculpting. These frozen dead cells are eventually purged from the body, leaving a more defined chin and jawline behind.

MESOTHERAPY

While Coolsculpting is more closely related to laser lipolysis, mesotherapy is more like injection lipolysis. It involves the targeted injection of deoxycholic acid, also known as Kybella, that eliminates fat cells. The difference is that mesotherapy gets injected into the mesoderm, while lipolysis gets injected into subcutaneous fat.

In addition to these treatments, The Plastic Surgery Center also offers neck and chin liposuction.
